The UAE's cultural capital, world-class free museums, vibrant souks, heritage districts and family attractions just 30 km from Dubai.
Most visitors to Sharjah have already spent three days in Dubai and are mildly overwhelmed by marble lobbies and shopping malls. Then they cross the border and find themselves in a city that banned alcohol in 1985, built more museums per square kilometre than almost any other city in the Arab world, and charges nothing for most of them. That dissonance is the point. Sharjah is the UAE's official Cultural Capital, and it takes that designation seriously. The Heritage Area has been restored with an archaeologist's precision. The Sharjah Art Museum holds one of the Gulf's most significant collections of Arab and Islamic art. And the Blue Souk sells carpets and antiques at prices Dubai vendors would never accept. Thirty minutes from Dubai by bus, AED 15 with a Nol card. Most visitors miss this entirely.
