Can Americans extend their stay in Dubai?

Not as visitors, in most cases. The UAE Embassy in Washington says US citizens are issued a visa on arrival allowing a maximum stay of 90 days, non-renewable, whether continuously or intermittently, within 180 days of the first entry. ICP's visa extension service is written for entry permits issued through a sponsor (tourism, visiting relatives, medical treatment or study) and does not list on-arrival entries. So the practical rule for an American visitor is simple: be out of the UAE by day 90 of your 180-day window.

If you need to stay longer, you have three realistic options: split your time into trips that fit inside 90 days, leave and come back once a new 180-day window starts, or apply for a residence visa that matches your situation. The entry basics (passport validity, fees and who qualifies) are on our page about the UAE visa for US citizens.

Correction to older advice

Earlier versions of this page, and many other guides, said Americans get 30 days on arrival that can be extended twice for AED 600 each. That does not match current UAE sources. UAE sources place US citizens in the 90-day group, and the UAE Embassy in Washington describes that stay as non-renewable. The overstay fine is AED 50 a day, not AED 100.

Planning a long stay within the 90-day limit

Snowbirds, long-stay visitors and people visiting family often spend months in Dubai legally by planning around the 180-day window.

  1. 1

    Fix your first entry date

Your 180-day window starts on the day you first enter the UAE. Every later visit in that window counts towards the same 90 days.

  2. 2

Add up every day in the country

A trip to Oman or Europe pauses the count while you are away, but it does not reset it. The UAE Embassy in Washington points travellers to the GDRFA Dubai visa calculator to check dates.

  3. 3

Book your exit with a buffer

Flights in the region were cancelled at short notice several times in 2026. Leave a few days between your last flight out and day 90 so a cancellation does not push you into an overstay.

  4. 4

Come back in the next window

Once 180 days have passed since your first entry, a new window begins. A common pattern for winter visitors is one long stay per season rather than back-to-back visits.

  5. 5

    Consider a sponsored visit visa

A UAE resident relative or friend can sponsor a visit visa, subject to ICP salary thresholds that start at AED 4,000 a month for first-degree relatives. Ask ICP, or GDRFA in Dubai, how this interacts with your 90-day count before you rely on it.
