Overview

Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost emirate of the UAE, is 100 km from central Dubai and offers a landscape that feels dramatically different from the flat desert and coastal plain that characterises most of the UAE. The Hajar Mountains reach their highest point in RAK at Jebel Jais (1,934 metres), and the combination of rugged mountain terrain, ancient forts, an eerie ghost village, and the world's longest zipline make this one of the most activity-rich day trips from Dubai.

No public bus connects Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah city, making a rental car or taxi the only practical options. The E311 Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road runs the full length of the journey and is a straightforward, well-maintained highway drive with no tolls. Car rentals from Dubai start at AED 80 to 120 per day for a compact vehicle, making the per-person cost of independent transport very low in groups of two or more.

Top Attractions

Jebel Jais — Free Scenic Drive

The drive up Jebel Jais is itself a significant attraction. The road climbs 1,934 metres through a series of well-maintained switchbacks with pull-off viewpoints at regular intervals. The top of the road offers views across the Hajar Mountains and into Oman on clear days. The drive is free and no permit or fee is required. In winter months (November to February), temperatures at the summit are 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Dubai, which can feel dramatic after months of Gulf heat.

Jais Flight — World's Longest Zipline — AED 799

Jais Flight holds the Guinness World Record for the longest zipline in the world at 2.83 km. Participants are harnessed in a horizontal (Superman-style) position and launched from a platform at approximately 1,680 metres elevation, reaching speeds of up to 150 km/h over a 90-second flight to the lower landing station. The experience costs AED 799 and includes the shuttle bus from the base car park to the launch platform.

Booking through jaisadventure.com is strongly recommended — the zipline sells out weeks in advance during peak season (October to March). Walk-in availability exists in summer months but is not reliable for peak season visits. Minimum age is 12 years; minimum weight 40 kg; maximum weight 110 kg; maximum height 195 cm.

Dhayah Fort — Free

Dhayah Fort is the only hilltop fort remaining in the UAE and dates from the 19th century. Situated on a dramatic rocky outcrop with 360-degree views across the palm groves and mangroves of the RAK interior, the fort is one of the most photogenic heritage sites in the northern emirates. The climb to the fort from the car park takes approximately 15 minutes on a stepped path. Entry is free and the fort is best visited in the morning before it becomes hot.

Al Jazirah Al Hamra — Free

Al Jazirah Al Hamra is a preserved pearl-fishing village that was abandoned in the early 1970s when its residents relocated following the oil boom. The village remains largely intact — coral-block houses, a mosque, a fort, and a market district sit in a state of arrested decay that is genuinely unlike anywhere else in the UAE. Entry is free and the village can be explored on foot. The empty streets and preserved architecture are exceptional for photography.

Marjan Island — Free Beach

Marjan Island is RAK's purpose-built resort island. Public beach access is available at the northern end of the island — a clean, uncrowded stretch of Arabian Gulf coastline far quieter than any public beach in Dubai. There are no facilities on the free beach section; bring water and shade if spending extended time here.

Insider Tips

  • Book Jais Flight as soon as your travel dates are confirmed — it genuinely sells out weeks ahead during the October to March season.
  • Fuel up in Dubai before departure — petrol stations on the Jebel Jais road are limited.
  • The Jebel Jais summit can be 10 to 15 degrees cooler than Dubai — pack a layer even in what feels like warm weather at sea level.
  • Return before 4:00 pm to avoid E311 afternoon congestion near the Dubai-Sharjah-RAK interchange area.
  • Carry cash for any incidental purchases — many roadside vendors in RAK are cash only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get to Ras Al Khaimah without a car?

There is no direct public bus between Dubai and RAK. Intercity taxis from Dubai to RAK city are available at approximately AED 200 to 250 one way. Once in RAK city, local taxis can be hired for half-day or full-day excursions at AED 150 to 250 for the driver's time. Renting a car in Dubai is significantly more cost-effective for groups of two or more.

Is the Jais Flight zipline suitable for people with a fear of heights?

This is not recommended for those with a genuine phobia of heights. The launch platform is elevated significantly above the mountainside and the 90-second flight at 150 km/h is a high-intensity experience. The company does not offer refunds for failure to launch due to fear once harnessed.

What is the best time of year for a RAK day trip?

October through March offers the best conditions. Jebel Jais is pleasantly cool at the summit, the driving is comfortable, and the scenery can be vivid after occasional winter rainfall. July and August are manageable for the drive and ghost village but midday heat at lower elevations is extreme.

Are there restaurants on Jebel Jais?

Yes. The Jais Nest cafe near the summit viewpoint serves hot drinks, snacks, and light meals. The adventure tourism development has also added food trucks and small vendors at the Jais Flight base area. Pack snacks and water for the drive up regardless.

Is Ras Al Khaimah alcohol-free like Sharjah?

No. Ras Al Khaimah permits alcohol at licensed hotels and some restaurants. The emirate has several international hotel brands with fully licensed bars and restaurants, making it a more relaxed emirate than Sharjah in this respect. The Marjan Island resort hotels all operate licensed food and beverage outlets.
