Stay on the crescent for a beach resort, on the trunk for convenience, or on the fronds for a private villa. Here is how the three areas compare and who each one suits.
Choose the crescent if the hotel and its beach are the holiday. Choose the trunk if you want to walk to the mall, Palm West Beach and the monorail. Choose a frond villa if you are a large group wanting space and privacy. If you plan to sightsee all over Dubai, a base in Dubai Marina or JBR is often more practical.
The Palm is one island, but the three parts give very different stays. This table sets out the trade-offs that matter most when booking.
| Area | Who it suits | Beach access | Transport |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crescent | Resort holidays, couples, families wanting a big pool and beach | Private hotel beaches, calm water facing the skyline | Far from the monorail except at Atlantis; taxis needed; long drive along the crescent |
| Trunk | First-timers, short stays, travellers who want to walk to shops | Palm West Beach and beach clubs; not every tower has a beach | Closest to the monorail, Palm Jumeirah Mall and the exit to Sheikh Zayed Road |
| Fronds | Large families and groups renting a villa | Private beach frontage on many villas | Gated residential streets; you need a taxi or car for everything; few services |
We have not listed nightly rates: they move sharply with season, school holidays and events, so compare the same dates across several hotels. For what the island is and how to reach it, see our Palm Jumeirah visitor guide.
The outer ring holds the big beach resorts. Atlantis The Palm and Atlantis The Royal sit at the centre. The West Crescent includes One&Only The Palm, Jumeirah Zabeel Saray and W Dubai The Palm, with more resorts along the East Crescent. Expect private beaches, large pools and in-house restaurants. The downside is distance: apart from Atlantis, which has a monorail station, you will take a taxi for almost every outing, and the drive along the crescent back to the trunk takes time.
The spine of the island mixes hotel towers, serviced apartments and beach hotels. The St. Regis Dubai, The Palm is in The Palm Tower above Palm Jumeirah Mall and The View. Hotels such as Andaz Dubai The Palm and FIVE Palm Jumeirah are also on the trunk, and several properties face Palm West Beach. You are closest to the mall, the monorail and the road off the island. Tower rooms may not have direct beach access, so check.
The fronds are private residential streets with villas, many with their own beach frontage. Holiday-home rentals let groups take a whole villa. Access is controlled, there are no shops or restaurants within walking distance, and you will need a car or taxis. Book only through licensed holiday-home operators and check what cleaning, pool and beach arrangements are included.
Dubai Marina, JBR and Al Sufouh are next to the Palm's entrance and often cost less. The Dubai Tram links them to the Palm Jumeirah stop, a footbridge from the monorail's Palm Gateway station, so a day on the island is easy without sleeping there.
A crescent resort with a kids' club and shallow beach, or Atlantis The Palm for Aquaventure World and the Lost World Aquarium on site. Atlantis has 1,544 rooms and is busy, so it suits families who want activity. See our guide to staying at Atlantis The Palm.
Smaller West Crescent resorts are calmer than the Atlantis end. Our Atlantis vs One&Only comparison sets out the difference between a mega-resort and a quieter beach hotel.
Trunk hotels with pool and beach club scenes suit groups of friends who want to be near the road off the island. Expect noise at weekends, which in the UAE fall on Saturday and Sunday.
Serviced apartments on the trunk are usually the lowest-cost way to sleep on the Palm. Staying in Dubai Marina and visiting for the day is cheaper still.
There is no metro on the island. Where you stay decides how much you rely on taxis.
Runs up the trunk from Palm Gateway via Al Ittihad Park and Palm Jumeirah Mall to Atlantis Aquaventure. AED 20 one way or AED 30 return to Atlantis, about 09:00 to 22:00, as of September 2026. It reopened in July 2026 after maintenance. Useful from the trunk and Atlantis, not from most crescent hotels.
The default from the crescent and fronds. Fares depend on distance and traffic; evening traffic on the trunk can be slow. Our Dubai taxi guide covers apps and fares.
