The UAE's compact geography is ideal for day trippers. From Dubai you can reach pristine East Coast beaches, ancient mountain villages, theme park capitals, and a world-class art museum — all in a single day.
Dubai sits at the crossroads of the UAE and can be your base for exploring in every direction. All distances are from central Dubai (Downtown/DIFC).
The UAE capital is the most rewarding day trip from Dubai. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is free to enter and genuinely breathtaking. Louvre Abu Dhabi (AED 63) houses world-class art in a stunning Jean Nouvel building.
Sharjah is the UAE's designated Arab cultural capital and sits just across the Dubai border. Its museums are excellent, less touristy than Dubai, and several are free. Note: alcohol is prohibited throughout Sharjah.
Ras Al Khaimah is the UAE's adventure hub, home to Jebel Jais — the country's highest mountain at 1,934 metres — and the world's longest zipline. Much cooler than the coast in summer months.
Fujairah faces the Indian Ocean rather than the Gulf and boasts the UAE's best natural beaches. The water is warmer, clearer, and better for snorkelling than the Dubai coast. Al Aqah Beach and Snoopy Island are highlights.
Hatta is Dubai emirate's mountain enclave on the Oman border, offering a completely different landscape from the coastal city. The Hatta Dam and surrounding mountains are strikingly beautiful. No direct public bus — car or organised tour required.
Al Ain is the UAE's garden city — a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a 3,000-year history of falaj irrigation. It has an authentic, less-touristy feel that is rare in the UAE. Al Ain Zoo is one of the region's best.
Abu Dhabi is an excellent base for exploring the broader UAE, with several unique options unavailable from Dubai.
Al Ain is closer to Abu Dhabi than to Dubai and equally accessible. The route via the E22 highway passes through dramatic desert landscapes. Combine Al Ain Oasis, the Palace Museum, and Jebel Hafeet in a full day.
A longer but rewarding trip. The drive from Abu Dhabi to Fujairah crosses the Hajar Mountains and is scenic in its own right. An early start (by 7am) allows a full 5-6 hours on the East Coast before returning.

Temperatures of 20-30C. All outdoor destinations are accessible and enjoyable. Peak tourist season from December-February — book popular attractions in advance.
Outdoor temperatures reach 38-48C. Beach trips and hikes are not advisable in the afternoon. Stick to morning departures and indoor destinations (museums, theme parks). Prices are significantly lower.
Hatta, Jebel Jais (RAK), and Fujairah are slightly cooler than the coast due to altitude and Indian Ocean breezes. Manageable even in summer for those acclimatised to heat.
Day trips are possible during Ramadan. Many restaurants are closed during daylight hours — bring your own food and water. Evening after Iftar (sunset) is a beautiful time to visit heritage areas and souks.
Abu Dhabi (130km) is the most popular for first-timers, offering the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, and Yas Island. For nature lovers, Hatta is outstanding — mountain scenery, a heritage village, and kayaking on Hatta Dam. For beaches, Fujairah's East Coast has the UAE's best snorkelling and clearest water.
It is very difficult. There is no direct public bus from Dubai to Hatta. Organised day tours (AED 200-350 per person) include pick-up from Dubai hotels and are the most practical option without a rental car. The drive is 125km via the E44 highway and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes.
Sharjah is the UAE's cultural capital and is only 30km from Dubai. The Museum of Islamic Civilization, Heart of Sharjah heritage district, and Sharjah Art Museum are excellent. Alcohol is prohibited in Sharjah (unlike Dubai), so plan your activities accordingly. The E303 bus from Al Ghubaiba costs AED 10 one-way.
October to April is ideal — temperatures of 20-30C make outdoor exploration comfortable. May through September brings extreme heat (38-48C outdoors). During summer, indoor-focused day trips to Abu Dhabi's museums and theme parks are more practical. Hatta and Jebel Jais in RAK are slightly more tolerable in summer due to altitude.
