Dubai Mall: More Than Just Shopping

Dubai Mall is the most visited building on the planet outside of places of worship, welcoming over 100 million visitors annually. Located at the base of the Burj Khalifa in Downtown Dubai, the mall spans a total area of 5.9 million square feet and is home to 1,200-plus stores, more than 200 restaurants, and a range of world-class entertainment attractions. Entry is completely free and the mall is open daily from 10am to midnight.

Scale and Layout

Dubai Mall has four main levels across two wings connected by a vast central atrium. Free shuttle buses operate between the main gates on busy days. The mall is connected to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall Metro station via a 750-metre air-conditioned walkway, making car-free access straightforward and comfortable year-round.

Fashion Avenue

The dedicated luxury wing hosts over 70 designer brands including Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Cartier, and Rolex in architecturally curated boutiques. An expansion in 2017 added 150 further fashion and lifestyle brands. Fashion Avenue connects via a sky bridge to the Address Boulevard hotel.

Dining Scene

With over 200 restaurants and cafes covering every major cuisine, Dubai Mall is a destination for dining as much as for shopping. The Waterfront Restaurant Row along Burj Lake offers direct views of the Dubai Fountain and houses Zuma, Nobu, The Cheesecake Factory, P.F. Chang's, and dozens more. The food court on the lower ground floor provides budget-friendly options starting at AED 25 per person.

Opening Hours

The mall opens at 10am daily. Most retail stores close at midnight Sunday through Wednesday, and at 1am Thursday through Saturday. The Dubai Aquarium, Ice Rink, and KidZania maintain their own schedules which may vary seasonally. Food outlets on the Waterfront may extend beyond mall hours on busy weekends.

Expert Tips for Visiting Dubai Mall

Avoid Peak Hours

Friday and Saturday evenings from 6pm to 10pm are the busiest periods of the week. Weekday mornings between 10am and 1pm offer the most relaxed experience with shorter queues at the aquarium and ice rink ticket counters. The 8pm Fountain show on weekends brings the largest surge to the waterfront area.

Metro is Fastest

The air-conditioned Metro walkway from Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall station avoids parking queues entirely and is operational from 5am to midnight weekdays and 10am to 1am on Fridays. A Nol card fare from the airport is approximately AED 7-8. This is consistently the most comfortable and predictable arrival method.

Pre-Book Aquarium and KidZania

KidZania sells out entirely on school holidays and long weekends. Pre-booking online saves disappointment and is typically 10-15 percent cheaper than gate prices. The Aquarium rarely sells out but advance tickets are still cheaper. SheikhWays can handle all pre-bookings on your behalf.

Download the Dubai Mall App

The official Dubai Mall app has an interactive store-by-store map, current restaurant promotions, and live parking availability across the 14,000-space car park. It is free and available for both iOS and Android. The real-time parking map alone is worth downloading before you drive in on a weekend.

Dubai Mall: Common Questions Answered

Is Dubai Mall really free to enter?

Yes, entry to Dubai Mall itself is completely free with no ticket or registration required. You walk in through any of the main gates. Attractions inside such as the Aquarium, Ice Rink, and KidZania each have their own separate admission prices.

What time does Dubai Mall open and close?

Dubai Mall opens at 10am daily. Most stores close at midnight Sunday through Wednesday and at 1am Thursday through Saturday. During major festivals like Dubai Shopping Festival the hours may extend. Individual attractions keep their own hours which can be checked on the Dubai Mall website.

How long should I plan for a Dubai Mall visit?

A minimum of half a day covers the highlights comfortably. A full day allows the aquarium, an evening Fountain show, two meals, and thorough browsing. Families planning to use KidZania should allow a full 5-6 hours for KidZania alone, plus additional time for the rest of the mall.

Is there a dress code at Dubai Mall?

Dubai Mall requests modest, respectful attire appropriate for a family environment. Swimwear and very revealing clothing are not suitable inside the mall. Standard casual and smart casual clothing is perfectly acceptable. Notices at entrances remind visitors of expectations but enforcement is not strict.

How do I get from Dubai Airport to Dubai Mall?

The most convenient route is the Dubai Metro Red Line from Terminal 1 or Terminal 3 directly to Burj Khalifa / Dubai Mall station. The journey takes approximately 30-35 minutes and costs around AED 7-8 with a Nol card. By taxi the journey is about 25 minutes and costs AED 60-80 depending on traffic and time of day.
