Which paid attractions earn their price, which free alternatives are just as good, and how to decide for your own trip.
In Dubai it is usually worth paying for experiences you cannot get for free: a high viewpoint, a trip into the desert, and one attraction built around your main interest. It is rarely worth paying for things the city already gives away, such as fountain shows, beaches, waterfront walks and the old souks.
We judge each option on three criteria: what you get that the free alternative does not give you, the price per hour of real experience, and who it suits. Prices below are as of September 2026; check official sites before travelling. If you want the full daily cost of a trip, see how much money you need for Dubai, and for general ways to cut costs, read our Dubai budget travel tips.
Each paid option set against the nearest free or cheaper alternative, with our verdict.
| Paid option | Free or cheaper equivalent | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| At the Top, Burj Khalifa (priced by time slot; sunset costs most) | Dubai Fountain show at the base FREE, or Dubai Frame (AED 50) | Pay if the tallest-building view is a priority; book a non-prime slot on the official site |
| Dubai Frame (AED 50 adult) | Views from Dubai Marina Walk FREE | Worth paying: cheapest proper observation deck in the city |
| Desert safari (price varies by operator) | No real free equivalent in the city | Worth paying for first-timers; compare inclusions |
| Beach club day pass | JBR Beach, Kite Beach FREE | Save, unless you want a pool and sunbed service |
| Dhow dinner cruise | Abra across the Creek (AED 1, cash) | Save for a short taste of the water; pay if the dinner and evening out are the point |
| Guided old Dubai tour | Self-guided walk in Al Fahidi and the Deira souks FREE | Save if you like exploring alone; pay if you want history and food explained |
| Global Village (around AED 25 to 30 in season) | Souks and street food in Deira FREE to browse | Worth paying: low entry for a full evening, especially for families |
| Theme and water parks | Public beaches and parks | Pay only if thrill rides or children's entertainment are a main reason for the trip |
The Museum of the Future is temporarily closed, the Dubai Museum at Al Fahidi Fort has been closed since 2021, and The Pointe on Palm Jumeirah closed in 2023. Older budget lists still recommend them.
These free experiences match or beat their paid versions for most travellers.
Our full list is in free things to do in Dubai.
For most first-time visitors on a limited budget, these two give the most you cannot get for free.
