The Full Day Plan

This itinerary is designed to give you the best of Abu Dhabi in a single day without rushing the main attractions or leaving feeling you have skimmed the surface. The 7am departure from Dubai takes advantage of light traffic before the morning rush, arrives at the Grand Mosque at opening time when morning light is at its most flattering, and structures the day to avoid the worst midday heat during a museum visit.

The total distance driven is approximately 280 kilometres return. The total cost including fuel, entry fees, and food sits between AED 250 and AED 450 per person depending on which museums you choose and your food choices. This represents excellent value for a day that covers some of the most architecturally significant buildings in the Arabian Peninsula.

Before You Leave Dubai

Fill the car with petrol in Dubai -- fuel is marginally cheaper in Dubai than Abu Dhabi. Download offline Google Maps for Abu Dhabi city in case signal is unreliable. Book the Grand Mosque visitor slot online if visiting during Ramadan or peak season -- entry is free but advance booking helps on busy days. Ensure women in the group have appropriate modest clothing or plan to use the abayas provided free at the mosque.

Hour-by-Hour Itinerary

7:00 am

Depart Dubai

Leave your Dubai accommodation by 7am. Take Sheikh Zayed Road (E11) south towards Abu Dhabi, or Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311) for potentially faster travel. The E311 joins E11 before Abu Dhabi city and often saves 10-15 minutes in moderate traffic. Estimated arrival at Grand Mosque: 8:45-9:15am depending on departure point and traffic.

Cost: Fuel AED 50-70 return, Salik toll AED 4
9:30 am

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

The Grand Mosque opens to non-Muslim visitors at 9am Saturday to Thursday (4:30pm on Fridays -- adjust itinerary if visiting on Friday). Morning light on the white marble is exceptional. The mosque complex is enormous -- the main prayer hall, courtyard, and reflecting pools together cover a large area. Budget 1.5-2 hours for a thorough visit including the main prayer hall, the world's largest hand-knotted carpet, the chandelier, and the outer colonnades. Photography throughout is excellent. Modest dress required: abayas provided free at the entrance for women who need them.

Cost: Free
11:30 am

Drive to Abu Dhabi Corniche

A 15-minute drive from the Grand Mosque to the Corniche waterfront area. Park in one of the metered bays (AED 2-3 per hour using the Mawaqif app or SMS system) or use the free parking sections further from the central Corniche. Walk north toward the Heritage Village and breakwater for the best skyline views across the water.

Cost: Parking AED 6-10
12:30 pm

Lunch on the Corniche

Multiple eating options exist on or near the Corniche. The Corniche Road itself has several Lebanese and international restaurants with water views. For budget eating, the area around the Abu Dhabi Centre (Hamdan Street) has Indian and Pakistani restaurants at AED 25-50 per person. For a mid-range sit-down with Corniche views, budget AED 80-150 per person. The fish market at the Mina Port end of the Corniche has adjacent seafood restaurants worth considering for fresh catch prepared simply.

Cost: AED 40-150 per person
2:00 pm

Qasr Al Watan or Louvre Abu Dhabi (Choose One)

Option A: Qasr Al Watan (Presidential Palace) -- AED 60 adult, AED 30 child. Entry to the active UAE presidential palace complex. The architecture is extraordinary -- a 39-metre central dome over a hall inlaid with hand-carved plasterwork and marble floors. Exhibitions cover UAE governance, heritage, and the palace's design and construction. An evening light show projects onto the palace facade from 7:30pm (included in entry). Recommend 1.5-2 hours. Located near the Corniche, 15-minute drive from lunch.

Option B: Louvre Abu Dhabi -- AED 63 adult, AED 52 (ages 13-22), free under 13. The Louvre Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat Island is a world-class museum covering human civilisation across cultures from ancient artefacts to contemporary art. The building -- a 180-metre floating dome by Jean Nouvel -- is itself a major attraction. The "rain of light" effect inside the dome, where geometric perforations create patterns of dappled light, is spectacular. Budget 2-3 hours minimum. Located on Saadiyat Island, 20-minute drive from Corniche.

Cost: AED 60-63 per adult

Optional Add: Heritage Village

If you have energy after the museum, the Abu Dhabi Heritage Village on the Corniche breakwater provides a contrast -- a reconstructed traditional Arabian village demonstrating pre-oil UAE life including a working falaj channel, date palm cultivation, traditional crafts, and a small museum. Entry is free. Allow 45-60 minutes. Located at the end of the Corniche, making it a logical final stop before the return drive.

Cost: Free
5:30 pm

Optional: Qasr Al Watan Evening Light Show

If you visited Qasr Al Watan in the afternoon, consider staying for the evening light show that begins at 7:30pm -- your entry ticket covers this. The palace illuminations and light show projected onto the facade are genuinely spectacular and are a highlight that many day visitors miss by leaving too early. If the evening light show is on your plan, adjust the return time accordingly and expect a 7:30-8:30pm departure from Abu Dhabi, arriving Dubai around 10pm.

Cost: Included in Qasr Al Watan entry
6:00 pm

Return to Dubai

Allow 1.5-2 hours for the return journey. Sunday evening traffic on E11 between Abu Dhabi and Dubai can be significant -- the E311 alternative is worth considering. Roadside petrol stations on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway have basic cafes and restrooms for a break if needed. Estimated Dubai arrival: 7:30-8:00pm.

Cost: No additional cost (fuel included in morning estimate)

Practical Variations

Visiting on a Friday

The Grand Mosque is closed to non-Muslim visitors until 4:30pm on Fridays (it is open for Muslim prayer from the morning, but visitor access begins only after Friday prayers). If visiting on a Friday, reverse the itinerary: start at the Corniche and Qasr Al Watan or Louvre in the morning, then drive to the mosque for the stunning late afternoon light. The mosque at sunset is genuinely extraordinary and less crowded than morning visits on other days.

Taking the Bus Instead of Driving

The E101 bus from Union Square Bus Station in Dubai costs AED 25 per person and takes approximately 2 hours to Abu Dhabi's Central Bus Terminal. From the terminal, taxis to the Grand Mosque cost AED 25-40. This reduces costs but limits flexibility -- getting between Saadiyat Island (Louvre) and the Corniche area by taxi adds approximately AED 30-50 per trip. The bus option works well for solo travellers or those specifically visiting only the Grand Mosque and Corniche on foot.

Dress Code Checklist

Grand Mosque: women must be fully covered -- abayas provided free but bringing your own is preferred. Men: long trousers, covered shoulders. Qasr Al Watan: smart casual, no shorts or sleeveless tops. Louvre: no strict dress code but standard modesty norms apply. Corniche beach areas: swimwear in the water zone is acceptable but cover up on the promenade.

Photography Tips

Grand Mosque: best light between 9:30am and 11am. The reflecting pool in front of the main facade photographs well in both morning and late afternoon light. Inside the prayer hall, photography is permitted. Louvre: the "rain of light" dome effect is strongest between 11am and 2pm. Qasr Al Watan: interior halls are very well-lit; the exterior at night during the light show is spectacular.

Driving Route Navigation

Google Maps navigation to "Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque" works reliably from Dubai. Use "Abu Dhabi Corniche" for the waterfront. "Qasr Al Watan" and "Louvre Abu Dhabi" are both searchable. In Abu Dhabi city, parking is metered -- download the Abu Dhabi Integrated Transport Centre Mawaqif app or use the SMS system. Grand Mosque has free parking on site.
