What to Expect at Dubai Immigration

The process for US passport holders is straightforward. Here is exactly what happens when you land at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

  1. 1

    Proceed to Immigration

Follow signs for "Arrivals" and "Passport Control." US citizens should join the queue for "All Passports" or designated e-gates if available for your passport type.

  2. 2

    Present Your US Passport

Hand your passport to the immigration officer. No visa application form is needed. The officer will verify your passport has at least 6 months of remaining validity.

  3. 3

    Biometrics

You will have your fingerprints scanned and a photograph taken. This is standard procedure for all visitors and takes under a minute.

  4. 4

    Receive Your Entry Stamp

Your passport is stamped with a 30-day visit visa at no charge. The date of entry is your start date — count 30 calendar days from that date.

  5. 5

    Collect Luggage and Proceed

Head to baggage reclaim, then through customs. You are free to enter. The whole immigration process typically takes 10 to 20 minutes for US passport holders.

Documents to Have Ready

You are not required to show these documents to receive your visa on arrival, but immigration officers can ask for them. Carrying these avoids any complications.

Note on ESTA

ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is a US government program that grants visa-free entry into the United States for eligible foreign nationals. It has no relevance to your travel to the UAE. Do not apply for ESTA for this trip.

Important Tips for US Travellers

  • Dubai operates on UAE law, not US law. Familiarise yourself with local rules around alcohol, photography, and public behaviour.
  • Alcohol is available in licensed hotels, restaurants, and bars — but drinking in public, on beaches, or in vehicles is illegal.
  • The US Embassy in Abu Dhabi can assist in genuine emergencies: +971 2 414 2200. The Dubai Consulate General: +971 4 309 4000.
  • The UAE Dirham (AED) is pegged to the USD at approximately 3.67 — there is virtually no exchange rate fluctuation.
  • Dubai has no income tax. Shopping is a major draw, but tourist VAT refunds (5%) are available at the airport for eligible purchases.
