Fujairah's Most Historic Landmark

Fujairah Fort is the most significant surviving historical structure in the UAE's east coast emirate — a powerful stone fort that has guarded the surrounding plain for at least 400 years, possibly longer. Located within the Fujairah Heritage Village complex, it rises dramatically against the backdrop of the Hajar Mountains that define Fujairah's inland landscape.

The fort was restored in the 1670s and represents one of the most complete examples of traditional UAE mud-brick and stone fortification architecture. The thick walls, circular watchtowers, and commanding hilltop position made it the dominant defensive structure of the region for centuries. For just AED 5, it's one of the UAE's most rewarding heritage visits.

Al Bidya Mosque: The UAE's Oldest

Just 10 minutes' drive north of Fujairah Fort, Al Bidya Mosque (also called the Ottoman Mosque) dates to 1446 AD — making it the oldest standing mosque in the UAE. The distinctive mud-brick structure with its four unfired domed roofs is remarkably well-preserved and sits in a strikingly scenic setting at the base of the Hajar Mountains.

Non-Muslims may visit the exterior and surrounding grounds but not enter the interior. Photography of the exterior is welcome and the mosque is one of Fujairah's most photographed subjects — particularly stunning in the golden hour light before sunset. Entry is completely free.

Insider Tips

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is Fujairah Fort?
The fort's age is debated among historians — it was documented as a standing structure in 1670 AD but is thought to be older, with some estimates placing original construction at 400+ years ago. It was restored and reinforced multiple times, making exact dating of the original structure difficult. It is unquestionably one of the oldest forts still standing in the UAE.
Can you go inside Fujairah Fort?
Yes — entry is AED 5 and allows access to the interior courtyard, the towers (climbable for views), and the surrounding Heritage Village exhibitions. The towers provide elevated views over Fujairah city and towards the mountains. Allow one hour for a complete visit.
What is at the Fujairah Heritage Village?
The Heritage Village adjacent to the fort contains open-air displays of traditional Emirati crafts, agricultural tools, fishing equipment, weapons, and reconstructed domestic scenes. It's free with your fort ticket and gives a fascinating window into life in pre-oil Fujairah. Allow 30 extra minutes to walk through it.
How far is Al Bidya Mosque from Fujairah Fort?
Approximately 10 minutes' drive north along the coastal highway towards Dibba. Al Bidya is signposted from the main road. The mosque is on the right-hand side heading north, sitting beautifully against the mountain backdrop. The exterior visit takes about 20 minutes.
Is Fujairah worth visiting from Dubai?
Absolutely — Fujairah offers an entirely different UAE experience. The east coast, the Hajar Mountains, the oldest mosque in the country, and world-class snorkelling at Snoopy Island are all within reach of each other. A full day easily fills with genuinely memorable experiences for a fraction of Dubai's price.
