  • Cost to purchase: AED 6 (includes AED 0 credit — load separately). The AED 6 is refundable when you return the card at a Metro station before departing.
  • Top up: At any Metro station ticket machine or customer service office. Minimum top-up: AED 10.
  • Types: Silver Nol (standard tourist card), Gold Nol (Gold Class access), Blue Nol (personalised, registered card — best for longer stays).
  • Also accepted: On RTA buses (AED 2-3 flat fare), Dubai Tram (AED 3), and some paid parking zones.
  • Buy at: Any Metro station, many supermarkets, and du/Etisalat stores.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Dubai Taxis (RTA)

  • Per km: AED 1.96
  • Minimum fare: AED 12
  • Waiting time: AED 30/hour

Intercity Bus Services

The E-series express buses connect Dubai to other emirates and are excellent value. They depart from main bus stations and are run by RTA and Emirates Transport.

Intercity Bus Tips

  • Buy tickets at the bus station counter or via the RTA smartphone app. Seats cannot always be reserved — arrive 20 minutes early on busy routes.
  • Buses depart frequently (every 20-60 minutes depending on route). There is no need to pre-book for most E-series routes except on public holidays.
  • Nol Cards are not accepted on intercity routes — purchase a separate ticket at the station.
  • All intercity buses are air-conditioned. Bring a light layer as they can be cold inside.

Car Rental in the UAE

Renting a car opens up day trips to Hatta, Fujairah's coastline, Ras Al Khaimah mountains, and Al Ain. Roads are excellent and well-signposted in English.

Car Rental Basics

From AED 80-120/day (economy)
  • Major companies: Budget, Hertz, Thrifty, Sixt, Avis — all at DXB and DWC airports
  • Local companies (e.g. Shift, OneClickDrive) can be 20-30% cheaper
  • International Driving Permit required for most non-GCC licence holders alongside your home licence
  • UAE licences and GCC licences: valid as-is
  • UK, US, EU, Australian, Canadian licences: usually accepted directly at major companies — confirm in advance
  • Minimum age: 21 years old (some companies require 25 for premium vehicles)

Fuel & Tolls

Petrol: AED 2.60-3.20/litre (2026)
  • Petrol is subsidised and very cheap compared to Europe and Australia
  • Salik toll gates: AED 4 per crossing, debited automatically from a Salik account or rental surcharge
  • Most rental companies add AED 5-10/day Salik surcharge automatically
  • Parking: Free in most areas. Paid zones (AED 2-4/hour) in Dubai CBD, Mall of Emirates, tourist areas — pay via RTA app or meters
  • Speeding fines are significant — cameras are everywhere. Strictly observe 60/80/100/120km/h limits

Best Routes for Day Trips

All well-paved, good signage
  • Dubai to Hatta: 125km, ~1h 20min via E44
  • Dubai to Fujairah: 130km, ~1h 30min via E611
  • Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah: 100km, ~1h via E11
  • Dubai to Al Ain: 160km, ~1h 45min via E66
  • Dubai to Abu Dhabi: 130km, ~1h 15min via E11 Sheikh Zayed Road

Etihad Rail — UAE's National Rail Network

Etihad Rail is the UAE's national freight railway, with plans for a passenger network connecting Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and the northern emirates. Phase 2 of the freight network (Abu Dhabi to Fujairah and Khalifa Port) is operational. Passenger services are in planning/development stages as of 2026, with no confirmed operational date for public use.

What This Means for Travellers (2026)

  • Passenger Etihad Rail is not yet operational for tourist use. Do not plan your itinerary around it.
  • Continue using E-series buses, taxis, or rental cars for intercity travel.
  • When passenger services do launch, expected routes include Abu Dhabi–Dubai–Sharjah–RAK, with high-speed connectivity reducing travel times significantly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the Dubai Metro cost?

A Nol Card costs AED 6 to purchase (the card itself, refundable). Metro fares range from AED 2 (Zone 1 short hop) to AED 8.50 (all zones, such as airport to city centre) per journey. Single paper tickets from machines cost AED 2-10 depending on zones. A day pass costs AED 22 and is worthwhile for 3 or more journeys in a day.

Are taxis cheap in Dubai?

Yes — Dubai taxis are among the most affordable in the world for a major international city. The flagfall is AED 5 (AED 5.50 from the airport). A typical 10km journey costs AED 20-30. Careem and Uber operate in Dubai and are usually AED 2-5 cheaper than standard taxis for the same route, though both surge during rain and peak hours.

How do I get from Dubai to Abu Dhabi by bus?

The E101 and E102 intercity buses connect Dubai to Abu Dhabi for AED 25 per person one-way. Buses depart from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station and Ibn Battuta Bus Station in Dubai and run frequently throughout the day. Journey time is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Careem Bus is a more comfortable option for around AED 35-45.

Is it worth renting a car in Dubai?

Car rental is most worthwhile for day trips outside Dubai — to Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Hatta, Fujairah, or Ras Al Khaimah. For travel within Dubai, the Metro and taxis are more convenient and avoid parking fees. Budget rental cars start from AED 80-120 per day. You will need a valid driving licence — check with the rental company whether an International Driving Permit is required for your nationality.

What is the Nol Card and where can I buy one?

The Nol Card is a rechargeable smart card used on the Dubai Metro, buses, tram, and water buses. It costs AED 6 to purchase (card only — no starting credit included) and can be loaded at any Metro station ticket machine. Using a Nol Card is mandatory on the Metro — cash is not accepted at fare gates. Buy one at any Metro station, or at many supermarkets and convenience stores throughout Dubai.
