The UAE's highest hilltop fort — a 19th-century stronghold that repelled British forces in 1819, now offering spectacular 360-degree views over Ras Al Khaimah and the Arabian Gulf.
Dhayah Fort (also spelled Dayah) is the UAE's most dramatically situated fort — perched on a rocky hilltop above the palm-covered Dhayah valley in Ras Al Khaimah. Built in the 19th century, it served as the last line of defence during the British campaign against the Qawasim rulers of RAK in 1819-1820. Despite the fort's strength, the British siege eventually forced surrender — ending Qawasim control of the region.
Today, the fort has been restored and is free to visit. The 30-40 minute hike to the top is rewarded with some of the most panoramic views in the UAE — the Dhayah valley with its date palms, the Hajar Mountains, Oman's Musandam Peninsula, and the Arabian Gulf.
What to bring: Good walking shoes (rocks are uneven), water (no facilities on the hike), and a camera — this is one of the best photography locations in the UAE. Go early morning for the best light and to avoid heat.
Yes — Dhayah Fort is completely free to visit, including the hike up the path and exploring the fort itself. There is no admission charge. The car park is also free.
Moderate difficulty — about 30-40 minutes up a rocky, clearly marked path. Requires reasonable fitness and good walking shoes (flip-flops are not suitable). Most healthy adults can manage it. Not suitable for very young children or those with mobility issues. The descent takes 20-25 minutes.
360-degree panoramic views including: the Dhayah palm valley directly below, Ras Al Khaimah city and coast, the Arabian Gulf, the Hajar Mountain range, and on very clear days, the Musandam Peninsula of Oman across the water. One of the most spectacular views in the UAE.
Drive north on E11 highway (Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road) for approximately 60-75 minutes to reach RAK. Then follow signs for Dhayah/Al Hamra area. Taxi from Dubai to Dhayah Fort: AED 150-180. No direct public bus to the fort — a car is essential.
Combine with Al Hamra Golf Club (AED 350-600 per round), Al Marjan Island beach and dining, Rixos resort day pass, and Wynn Al Marjan Island construction viewing. RAK has grown significantly and now offers a full day of activities beyond the fort.
