  Dubai Fountain Show

  The world's largest choreographed fountain system shoots water 150 metres into the air over Burj Lake to classical and contemporary music. Watch free from the pedestrian bridge beside Dubai Mall, or from the outdoor Souk Al Bahar terrace. Shows every 30 minutes from 7pm (Mon-Thu), 6:30pm on Fridays, 7pm on weekends. The 9pm show on a clear night with the Burj Khalifa lit up behind it is extraordinary.

  JBR Beach (The Walk)

  One of Dubai's most popular public beaches — a wide, sandy stretch facing the Arabian Gulf with the glittering Dubai Marina skyline rising directly behind it. Free to access, with clean facilities. The beach is safe for swimming. The JBR Walk promenade behind it has street entertainment, cafes and restaurants (you pay for what you eat; the walk and beach are free).

  Kite Beach, Jumeirah

  A gorgeous public beach in Jumeirah with a direct view of the Burj Al Arab hotel on the horizon. Kite Beach is popular with kite surfers, beach volleyball players and families. Clean, well-maintained, with outdoor gyms and a long boardwalk. One of the best photo spots in Dubai for the Burj Al Arab backdrop. Free to access any time.

  Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood

  Dubai's best-preserved heritage district, with traditional wind-tower architecture from the early 20th century. Free to wander through the narrow alleyways. Several small art galleries and the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding are based here. The contrast with the skyscrapers visible nearby is extraordinary. Cool, shaded, fascinating in the mornings.

  Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary

  A mangrove and mudflat wetland reserve right in the heart of the city, home to over 3,000 greater flamingos along with herons, eagles and over 200 other bird species. Three bird hides give close-up views. Open Saturday to Thursday, 7:30am to 5:30pm. Free entry. Take binoculars if you have them. One of the most surprising and beautiful free experiences in Dubai.

  Dubai Marina Walk

  A 7-kilometre promenade around the Dubai Marina canal, lined with skyscrapers, boats, restaurants and cafes. Free to walk. Beautiful at any time of day but best at golden hour (sunset) when the light catches the glass towers and yachts. The full circuit takes about 90 minutes at a leisurely pace.

  Love Lake, Al Qudra

  Two heart-shaped lakes in the desert of Al Qudra (about 30-45 minutes from the city). Home to flamingos, ducks and other birds. Beautiful at sunrise and sunset. Often has BBQ facilities. Completely free to visit — bring water, snacks and a picnic blanket. Best reached by Careem (return trip shared between people is cheap) or as part of a desert drive.

  Al Qudra Cycling Track

  An 86-kilometre free cycling track through the desert, looping around the Al Qudra lakes. Completely free to use — you just need to rent or bring a bicycle. Early morning desert cycling when temperatures allow is one of Dubai's most underrated experiences. Bike rentals available in the city from around AED 30-60 per day.

  Dubai Creek Abra Crossing

  The traditional wooden abra water taxis that have crossed Dubai Creek for centuries still run today — for just AED 1. This barely-qualifies-as-not-free boat ride across the Creek is one of the most atmospheric experiences in Dubai. The route from the Bur Dubai side to Deira takes about 5 minutes and gives you a perfect view of the historic Creek waterfront.

  Jumeirah Mosque Free Guided Tours

  One of Dubai's most beautiful mosques runs free guided tours for non-Muslims on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings at 10am, organised by the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding. Women are provided with abayas. No booking needed — arrive a few minutes before 10am. An excellent and respectful introduction to Islamic culture in Dubai.

  Gold Souk, Deira

  Over 300 gold shops under covered alleyways, displaying some of the largest gold jewellery collections anywhere in the world. Free to browse — no pressure to buy. The sheer volume and variety is staggering. The souk is most atmospheric in the early evenings. Bargaining is standard if you do want to purchase.

  Spice Souk, Deira

  A short walk from the Gold Souk, the Spice Souk is one of the most sensory experiences in Dubai. Sacks of saffron, cardamom, frankincense, dried roses and hundreds of spices and herbs spill out of shops. The fragrances are extraordinary. Free to browse — small bags of spices make excellent inexpensive souvenirs.

  Bluewaters Island Promenade

  A free walk on the artificial island off JBR, with views of the Ain Dubai Ferris wheel (the world's largest, though it's currently not operating), the Dubai Marina skyline and the sea. The promenade has restaurants and cafes but the walking and views are free. Beautiful at sunset.

  Zabeel Park

  A large public park between Karama and Oud Metha, with views of the Dubai skyline visible over the trees. Entry is just AED 5 — which we are rounding to essentially free. The park has walking paths, gardens and a lake. Ideal for a morning walk or sunset picnic away from tourist areas.

  The Pointe, Palm Jumeirah

  A free outdoor waterfront dining and leisure destination at the tip of Palm Jumeirah, with direct views across the water to the Atlantis The Palm hotel. The walk around The Pointe at sunset — with Atlantis lit up across the water — is one of the most photogenic free experiences in Dubai. The monorail to Palm costs AED 15 return from Mall of Emirates metro.

  Dubai Frame — Exterior View

  The iconic 150-metre picture frame structure (which frames views of old and new Dubai) charges AED 50 for entry inside. But viewing it from outside — from Zabeel Park or the surrounding streets — is completely free. It is particularly striking at night when illuminated.

  Al Seef Heritage Waterfront

  A beautifully designed waterfront development along Dubai Creek, mixing restored traditional architecture with contemporary cafes and restaurants. The walkway along the Creek is free and atmospheric, especially in the evening when dhow (traditional boat) lights reflect on the water. Between Al Fahidi and the abra stations.

  The stretch of Dubai Creek from Al Seef to the Al Fahidi district offers one of the most atmospheric free walks in the city. Traditional wooden dhows moor along the creek, loading cargo exactly as they have for decades. The contrast of ancient trading boats against the modern city skyline is uniquely Dubai. Best in the late afternoon when the light is golden.
