Entry rules for US passport holders
According to the UAE Embassy in Washington, US passport holders receive a visa on arrival valid for 90 days within a 180-day period, and it is not renewable. There is no online form to complete before you fly. Carry a passport with at least six months' validity, a return or onward ticket, and your hotel details. Overstaying costs AED 50 for each extra day, so count your days if you are combining Dubai with other trips to the UAE.

The travel advisory and safety picture in 2026
Dubai has low rates of street crime, but the regional security situation changed in 2026. The US State Department reissued its UAE advisory at Level 3, "Reconsider Travel", on 29 August 2026. In March 2026 a drone strike near Dubai International Airport (DXB) halted flights for more than seven hours, and several governments now warn about the risk of further strikes in the region.
- Enrol in the State Department's Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) so the US Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General in Dubai can reach you.
- Check that your travel insurance covers trips to a Level 3 destination; some policies exclude them.
- Book flexible fares where you can, and keep a buffer day before any onward connection.

The dirham is pegged to the dollar at AED 3.6725, so a quick mental conversion is "divide by 3.67". Visa and Mastercard work almost everywhere, including taxis, malls and the metro ticket machines. American Express is accepted at most hotels and larger restaurants but less often at small shops. Use a card with no foreign transaction fee, and always choose to pay in dirhams when a card terminal offers dollars, because the terminal's conversion rate is usually worse.

Flights and the time difference
Emirates flies nonstop to Dubai from several US gateways, and other airlines connect through Europe or the Gulf. Nonstop flights from the East Coast take roughly 12 to 13 hours; from the West Coast, expect around 16 hours. Check current schedules, as the March 2026 disruption showed that flights can be suspended at short notice.

Laws that surprise American visitors
Several things that are legal or minor at home are serious offences in the UAE. The main ones for US travellers:
- Medication: some prescription drugs common in the US, including certain ADHD medicines, strong painkillers and sleeping pills, are controlled in the UAE. Carry the prescription and check the UAE Ministry of Health rules before you fly.
- Cannabis and CBD: legal in many US states but illegal in the UAE, including trace amounts and CBD products.
- Alcohol: the legal drinking age is 21. Drink only in licensed venues such as hotel bars; drinking in public and any drink-driving are offences.
- Social media and photos: insulting posts, swearing and photographing people without consent can lead to fines or arrest.

Plugs, phones and driving
US plugs do not fit Dubai sockets, so pack a Type G adapter. Most phone and laptop chargers handle 230V; check the label on anything rated 120V only, such as hair tools, because it will need a converter.
