When you land in Dubai on a US passport, you go straight to passport control: there is no visa form, no fee and nothing to arrange in advance. Holders of biometric US passports can use the Smart Gates, while families with children use the staffed counters. After immigration you collect your bags and walk through the green or red customs channel. The practical risks are elsewhere: some US prescription medicines are controlled in the UAE, cannabis products are illegal, and cash over AED 60,000 must be declared. Checked as of September 2026.

Step by step: landing at DXB on a US passport

Smart Gates or the staffed counter
Dubai Airports lists visa-on-arrival guests with biometric passports among the travellers who can use the Smart Gates, and all current US passports are biometric. You do not need to register before you fly: first-time users are registered at the passport control point when they arrive at DXB or Dubai World Central (DWC). Dubai Airports also offers a Smart Gates PreCheck tool if you want to confirm eligibility in advance.
Some travellers cannot use the gates and go to a staffed counter instead:
- families travelling with children, and anyone under 1.2 metres tall;
- passengers with disabilities who need assistance;
- travellers with large strollers.
If you have a visa problem on arrival, the GDRFA visa office in the Terminal 3 arrivals area is open 24 hours a day. Etihad passengers arrive at Zayed International in Abu Dhabi instead; the same visa rules apply there.
Customs allowances for US travellers
These are the duty-free limits from the Dubai Customs passenger guide. They apply per passenger and only to personal, non-commercial quantities.

Items that need a permit from the relevant authority include medicines and medical equipment, drones, wireless devices, food products, plants and pets. Items not allowed include narcotics of all kinds, nasvaar and betel leaves (paan), counterfeit goods and money, gambling equipment and obscene material. This is the arrival issue most likely to cause real trouble for Americans. Some medicines that are routine in the US, such as codeine and certain psychiatric medicines, are controlled substances in the UAE. Bringing them in without prior permission from the UAE Ministry of Health can lead to confiscation, fines or prosecution, even in small quantities.
- Check every prescription against UAE rules before you travel, and apply for permission where it is needed.
- Carry the medicine in its original packaging with a copy of your prescription or a doctor's letter.
- Pack only what you need for the trip.
- Do not bring any cannabis product, including CBD and THC items sold legally in many US states. The UAE has zero tolerance for drugs, including for travellers in transit, and traces found in blood or urine tests can lead to conviction.

Flight disruption and the 2026 advisory
As of September 2026 the US State Department rates the UAE at Level 3: Reconsider Travel, and a US Mission alert on 19 September 2026 warned Americans in the region to expect possible flight cancellations and airspace closures. For an arrival, that means booking flexible fares where you can, keeping your airline's app switched on for rebooking alerts, and enrolling in STEP before you fly. Flying home: US preclearance is in Abu Dhabi, not Dubai
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) lists Abu Dhabi as one of its 16 preclearance locations worldwide, and the only one in the Middle East. When it operates, passengers on eligible US-bound flights from Zayed International clear US immigration and customs before boarding and land in the US as domestic passengers. There is no preclearance at Dubai International, so on flights from DXB you clear CBP at your US arrival airport.
When we checked in September 2026, Etihad's preclearance page reported the Abu Dhabi facility as temporarily closed, with passengers clearing US immigration and customs on landing. The status can change at short notice, so check Etihad's US preclearance page close to your departure date.
What to keep in your hand luggage
- US passport with at least six months of validity beyond your arrival date.
- Return or onward ticket, saved offline.
- Hotel booking or your host's address.
- Medicines in original packaging, with prescriptions and any UAE permission.
- Travel insurance details, ideally including evacuation cover; see our travel insurance guide for Dubai.
