At AED 30 per adult, Al Ain Zoo is arguably the world's best-value zoo — 900 hectares, 4,000 animals from 200+ species, and a world-renowned Arabian oryx breeding program.
Al Ain Zoo is one of the oldest and largest zoos in the Arab world — established in 1968 by the late Sheikh Zayed, who had a passionate commitment to wildlife conservation. The 900-hectare site is significantly larger than most zoos and keeps animals in spacious, naturalistic environments.
| Zone / Highlight | Key Species | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Arabian Zone | Arabian oryx, sand gazelle, Arabian wolf | World's largest oryx conservation breeding program |
| African Savannah | Giraffes, lions, cheetahs, white rhinos | Open grassland habitat, best in morning |
| Asian Zone | Elephants, tigers, camels | Elephant encounters available separately |
| Bird Zone | Flamingos, macaws, ostriches | Walk-through aviary sections |
| Safari Bus | Multiple species at distance | AED 20 extra, 45-minute tour |
Arabian Oryx Conservation: Al Ain Zoo played a critical role in saving the Arabian oryx from extinction. By the 1970s, only 10 wild oryx survived in the UAE. Through Al Ain's breeding program, the species has been restored to over 1,000 animals. This conservation legacy is part of what makes Al Ain Zoo extraordinary.
Adult tickets cost AED 30 and children (3-12) pay AED 15. Under 3 enter free. The optional safari bus costs AED 20 extra. At AED 30 for adults, it is significantly cheaper than Dubai Safari Park (AED 60) and one of the world's best-value zoo experiences.
4,000+ animals from 200+ species including Arabian oryx (world-famous conservation breeding program), sand gazelles, cheetahs, lions, giraffes, elephants, white rhinos, tigers, flamingos, and one of the most comprehensive Arabian wildlife collections anywhere.
By car: 2 hours from Dubai (E66 highway), 1.5 hours from Abu Dhabi (E22). Car is strongly recommended. Taxi from Al Ain city centre: AED 15-25. From Al Ain bus station (connections from Dubai/Abu Dhabi), taxi to zoo.
3-4 hours for the main zones, plus 45 minutes if you take the safari bus. Opening hours are 9am-5:30pm, closed Mondays. Combine with Al Ain Oasis (free, 20 minutes away) for a perfect full day — oasis in the morning, zoo in the afternoon.
At AED 30, absolutely — it is exceptional value and an extraordinary zoo by any global standard. The Arabian oryx conservation story alone is compelling. The 900-hectare size and naturalistic habitats make it very different from urban zoos. Recommended especially for families and nature enthusiasts.
