Karama: cheap Kerala meals and biryani
Karama is the easiest place in Dubai to eat a full South Indian or Kerala meal on a small budget. Streets around the Karama Centre and the old Karama market are lined with small restaurants serving parotta, appam, fish curry and Malabar biryani to office workers and families.
- Calicut Paragon (Karama): a Kerala restaurant with a long queue at lunch. Its Karama menu lists breads such as porotta and appam at under AED 4 each, with fish curries from about AED 36 and many mains around AED 25. It is not the cheapest place in Karama, but it is the easiest one for first-timers to trust.
- Smaller Kerala canteens: the side streets have many one-room restaurants serving a lunch "meals" plate of rice, sambar, a few vegetable sides and pickle. These are usually the cheapest hot meal in the area. Look for a busy room and a menu board with prices.
- Bikanervala (Karama): the Indian pure-vegetarian chain has a Karama branch for chaat, thalis and mithai. Handy if some of your group are strictly vegetarian.
Karama is also a shopping stop, so it works well as an evening plan: browse the market, then eat. For more places in the area, including non-Indian options, read our Karama restaurant guide.

Meena Bazaar, the textile and gold lanes of old Bur Dubai, is where Gujarati, Rajasthani and Sindhi traders have eaten for decades. It is the best area for cheap vegetarian Indian food, and several restaurants cook without onion and garlic on request.
- Rangoli Vegetarian Restaurant: reviewers report an upstairs Gujarati thali at about AED 27 plus tax, with dal or kadhi, vegetables, roti, rice, curd, a sweet and a farsan.
- Puranmal Vegetarian Restaurant: a North Indian veg restaurant and sweet shop. Listings put the cost for two at roughly AED 50.
- Saravanaa Bhavan (Bur Dubai): the South Indian vegetarian chain. Its unlimited South Indian thali has been reported at about AED 30, and dosas cost less.
- Bhavna Vegetarian and Veg World: two more thali-style pure-veg options in the same lanes if the first choices are full.

Tips for eating cheaply as an Indian tourist
- Eat lunch as your main meal: many small restaurants run a fixed lunch plate that is better value than ordering from the menu at dinner.
- Take the Metro: ADCB, Al Fahidi and Al Ghubaiba stations make taxis unnecessary for these areas. Our Dubai Metro guide explains fares and cards.
- Jain and no onion, no garlic: Meena Bazaar veg kitchens are the most used to these requests. Ask before ordering.
- Halal: meat served in Dubai restaurants is halal as standard. Pure-veg restaurants serve no meat at all.
- Spice: ask for food "Indian spicy" if you want the heat you are used to at home.
- Payment: most restaurants take cards, but carry some cash for the smallest canteens and sweet shops.
- Timing: weekends in the UAE are Saturday and Sunday, and Karama and Bur Dubai are busiest on those evenings. Go before 20:00 to avoid queues.
