The Dubai 3-day itinerary at a glance

For a first visit, the Dubai 3-day itinerary that works best gives each day one part of the city: Day 1 Downtown (Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall and the Dubai Fountain), Day 2 Old Dubai (Al Fahidi, Al Shindagha Museum, an AED 1 abra across the Creek and the Deira souks), and Day 3 the Jumeirah coast in the morning and an evening desert safari. Grouping sights this way means you never cross the city twice in a day, and it keeps the long safari evening away from your arrival and departure. Day 1: Downtown Dubai, Burj Khalifa and the Fountain

Downtown suits a first day because everything is within one walkable block and mostly indoors. Take the Red Line to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall; the enclosed walkway from the station into the mall takes 10 to 15 minutes. Spend the late morning and afternoon in Dubai Mall, where you can see the big aquarium tank from the ground floor for free.

End the day at the Dubai Fountain. Evening shows run every 30 minutes from 6pm to 11pm, with afternoon shows at 1pm and 1:30pm (2pm and 2:30pm on Fridays), and watching from the promenade is free. If you arrive in the morning with energy to spare, the Dubai Frame in Zabeel Park (AED 50 for adults) is a short taxi ride away.

Day 2: Old Dubai, the Creek and the souks

Start early, before the heat. Ride the Green Line to Sharaf DG (formerly Al Fahidi station) and walk about 10 minutes to the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, a free-to-walk quarter of wind-tower houses, galleries and courtyard cafés. The old Dubai Museum in Al Fahidi Fort has been closed for restoration since 2021, with no confirmed reopening date as of September 2026, so for the city's history go to Al Shindagha Museum further along the Creek. It opens at 10am, and adult tickets were about AED 35 in September 2026.

From the Bur Dubai abra station, cross the Creek on a wooden abra to Deira Old Souq: AED 1 per person, cash, a few minutes on the water. The Spice Souk is right by the landing and the Gold Souk is a few minutes' walk north. Most shops open around 10am and many pause in the early afternoon; on Fridays many open only after midday prayers, so swap days 2 and 3 if your Friday falls here. Have lunch in Deira, where small cafeterias are far cheaper than Downtown.

In the late afternoon, cross back by abra and walk south along the water to Al Seef, a waterfront of restored-style buildings, cafés and restaurants, for dinner. Day 3: The Jumeirah coast and an evening desert safari

Spend the morning on the coast. Kite Beach is a free public beach with showers, cafés and a view down the shore to the Burj Al Arab. From there it is about 10 minutes by taxi to Souk Madinat Jumeirah for lunch by the canals and a closer view of the Burj Al Arab. The hotel itself is open only to guests, diners with a booking and paid tours. This area is not on the Metro, so short taxis are the practical option.

Be back at your hotel by early afternoon. Most evening desert safaris collect you in the mid-afternoon and drop you back around 9pm, with dune driving, a sunset stop and dinner at a camp. Prefer the Palm to the desert? Swap the safari for Palm Jumeirah: take a taxi to Palm Gateway and ride the Palm Monorail to Atlantis (AED 20 single or AED 30 return as of September 2026), then stay for sunset on the Palm's beach side.

Where to stay for three days

With only three days, stay near a Red or Green Line station so the first two days need no taxis.

• Downtown Dubai: the easiest base for this plan. Day 1 is on your doorstep and Old Dubai is about 25 to 30 minutes away by Metro with one change.
• Bur Dubai or Deira: cheaper hotels, on the Green Line, and Day 2 starts on foot. Downtown is a short Metro ride.
• Dubai Marina or JBR: best if beach time matters, but it adds 35 to 45 minutes each way to Downtown and more to Old Dubai.

Getting around on this itinerary

Buy a Silver nol card at any Metro station: it costs AED 25, including AED 19 of credit, and each Metro journey then costs AED 3, AED 5 or AED 7.50 depending on the number of zones. Everyone needs their own card. The abra takes cash only. For the Jumeirah coast on Day 3, use metered RTA taxis or a ride-hailing app. Metro stations open at 5am from Monday to Saturday but not until 8am on Sundays, and close at midnight (1am after Friday night).
