About Liwa Desert

Liwa is an oasis town in Abu Dhabi emirate, situated on the northern edge of Rub Al Khali — the Empty Quarter, the world's largest continuous sand desert. The dunes here are fundamentally different from those near Dubai: reaching 300 metres in height, with sweeping faces that extend for kilometres, and an absolute stillness that the proximity of Dubai never permits.

Moreeb Dune (Tal Moreeb) at 300m is the tallest sand dune in the UAE — a cathedral of orange sand that hosts the annual Liwa Festival car hill climb competition every January, drawing spectacular 4WD vehicles attempting its impossible slope.

Accommodation: Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is one of the world's great remote luxury hotels — completely surrounded by dramatic dunes (from AED 1,200/night). For budget visitors, Liwa Oasis town has basic hotels. Most visitors drive from Abu Dhabi (2 hours) for a day or overnight trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Liwa Desert worth visiting?

Yes — if you want the "real" UAE desert experience. Liwa's 300m dunes dwarf those near Dubai (30-50m). The Empty Quarter silence and scale are profound. The journey (3 hours from Dubai) is the main barrier — plan a 2-day trip to justify it fully.

How far is Liwa from Dubai?

Approximately 290km from Dubai — about 3 hours by car via E11 south then E45. From Abu Dhabi city it is 200km (2 hours). The drive south passes through date palm groves and increasingly dramatic desert landscape as you approach the Empty Quarter.

What is the Liwa Festival?

The annual Liwa International Festival of Falconry and Desert Sports is held in January at Moreeb Dune. Highlights include the legendary Moreeb Dune car hill climb (4WDs attacking the 300m slope), camel racing, falconry displays, traditional games, and cultural performances. Free to spectate.

Can you go to Liwa without a 4WD?

A regular car is fine for driving to Liwa Oasis town and viewing the dunes from the road or Moreeb Dune base camp car park. For off-road dune driving, a 4WD is essential. Rental 4WDs are available in Abu Dhabi from AED 250/day. Never attempt dune driving alone — always go with experienced company.

Where to stay in Liwa Desert?

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is the iconic choice — completely surrounded by enormous orange dunes, from AED 1,200/night (outdoor pool, spa, camel rides). Liwa Hotel in Liwa Oasis town is budget (AED 200-350/night, basic facilities). Or day trip from Abu Dhabi.
