The annual Liwa International Festival of Falconry and Desert Sports is held in January at Moreeb Dune. Highlights include the legendary Moreeb Dune car hill climb (4WDs attacking the 300m slope), camel racing, falconry displays, traditional games, and cultural performances. Free to spectate.
A regular car is fine for driving to Liwa Oasis town and viewing the dunes from the road or Moreeb Dune base camp car park. For off-road dune driving, a 4WD is essential. Rental 4WDs are available in Abu Dhabi from AED 250/day. Never attempt dune driving alone — always go with experienced company.
