Desert lakes teeming with flamingos, herons, and 150+ bird species — just 45 minutes from downtown Dubai and completely free to visit.
Al Qudra Lake is a series of artificial desert lakes in the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, approximately 45 minutes drive from Downtown Dubai. Despite being surrounded by sand dunes, the lakes attract over 150 species of migratory and resident birds — including flamingos, which gather in large flocks from October to April.
The area is part of Dubai's commitment to biodiversity conservation. A cycling track circumnavigates the lakes, and camping is permitted year-round without any permit requirement. The night sky here — far from city light pollution — is extraordinary.
What to bring: Water (no facilities), binoculars (highly recommended), food, rubbish bags (leave no trace), insect repellent (evening), and a warm layer for winter evenings. No toilets — plan accordingly.
Completely free. No entry fees, no parking charges, no permit for camping. Just drive there and enjoy. The only "cost" is fuel and whatever food/drinks you bring.
Drive via Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road (E311), take Al Qudra Road exit, and follow signs for Al Qudra Lake or Al Marmoom Conservation Reserve. GPS coordinates: 24.9428° N, 55.3136° E. No public transport — car essential.
150+ species including pink flamingos (best October-April), grey herons, great cormorants, little egrets, ferruginous ducks, coots, and numerous migratory waders. Visit early morning for the most active birdlife. The flamingo flocks can number hundreds of birds.
Yes — especially for wildlife enthusiasts, photographers, and cyclists. Seeing flamingos in a desert setting 45 minutes from Dubai is genuinely remarkable. The cycling track, camel sightings, and desert landscape make it a unique free experience that most tourists completely miss.
Minimal — no toilets, no food outlets, no rubbish bins. There is a cycling track around the lake perimeter and some basic bench seating areas. Bring everything you need and take all rubbish away with you. This is a conservation area — respect the environment.
