Paddle silently through ancient mangrove channels teeming with flamingos, herons, and crabs — one of Abu Dhabi's most unique and peaceful experiences.
Abu Dhabi's Eastern Corniche is flanked by one of the world's largest urban mangrove forests — the Eastern Mangrove Lagoon National Park covers over 75 hectares of protected mangrove ecosystem just minutes from the city centre. Guided kayaking tours paddle through the channels between ancient mangrove roots, guided by knowledgeable naturalists.
The experience is genuinely magical — the channels narrow to just a few metres wide, the canopy closes overhead, and the only sounds are water, paddles, and the calls of herons and flamingos. A complete contrast to the city's gleaming towers visible above the trees.
What to bring: Water (2 litres minimum), sun hat, sunscreen, quick-dry clothing, water shoes or sandals that can get wet. No experience needed — guides provide full instruction. Most tours limited to 6-8 kayaks per guide for an intimate experience.
Guided 2-hour tours cost AED 150-200 per person. Self-guided kayak rental is AED 80-100 per hour. Main operators: Abu Dhabi Adventure Activities Company (ADAC), various eco-tour operators on Eastern Corniche. Book at least 24 hours ahead.
The Eastern Mangrove Lagoon National Park on Eastern Corniche (Corniche Al Sharq), approximately 15 minutes from Abu Dhabi city centre by taxi (AED 15-25). GPS: near Eastern Mangrove Hotel Abu Dhabi Lagoon. Multiple operators are based along the Eastern Corniche road.
No experience required. The mangrove channels are completely calm and sheltered. Guides provide basic paddling instruction (10-15 minutes) at the start of every tour. Most people master the basics within 5 minutes. Children aged 6+ can usually participate with a parent in a tandem kayak.
Pink flamingos (especially October-April), grey herons, little egrets, great cormorants, kingfishers, ospreys, and various waders. Underwater you'll see fiddler crabs, mudskippers, and small fish in the clear lagoon water. An unexpectedly rich ecosystem.
October to April for comfortable temperatures (20-32°C). Early morning tours (8-10am) are best for wildlife activity and cooler conditions. Avoid June-September when conditions are extremely hot and humid (35-40°C+). Flamingos are most reliably present November-March.
