Morning Desert Safari Dubai: What to Expect, Month by Month
A morning desert safari in Dubai is a three to five hour trip into the red dunes, usually around Lahbab, with a 4x4 dune drive, sandboarding and a short camel ride, and you are back in the city by about midday. What it feels like depends heavily on the month: in January the city's average overnight low is around 15°C, so dawn in the desert feels fresh, while in August the low is above 30°C and the sand is hot soon after sunrise. There is no dinner, no belly dance and no fire show. You trade the evening camp for quieter dunes, softer light and a free afternoon.
This page covers the experience itself. For package prices and what each one includes, see our morning desert safari prices.
What a morning desert safari feels like, step by step
There are two versions. A sunrise safari collects you before dawn so you are on the dunes when the sun comes up. A standard morning safari picks up after breakfast, typically between about 7:30 and 9 am, and runs until around midday. The activities are much the same; the light, the temperature and the alarm clock are not.
The pickup and the drive out
For a sunrise tour, expect a knock-on-the-door time somewhere around 4:30 to 5:30 am depending on the season and where your hotel is. The drive from central Dubai out towards the Lahbab and Al Madam area takes roughly an hour, most of it on empty roads. Many people doze in the back. Standard tours do the same drive in morning traffic.
Tyre deflation and the dune drive
At the edge of the dunes the driver lets air out of the tyres for grip, then takes the 4x4 up, across and down the dunes for around 30 to 45 minutes. It is loud, bumpy and quick, with sideways slides and steep drops. At dawn the sand is cool and the dune crests still carry the ripple patterns the overnight wind left behind. If you feel unwell, tell the driver: they can slow down or stop.
Sunrise, sandboarding and the camel ride
Most tours stop on a high dune for photos, then move to a sandboarding slope. Sandboarding here is closer to sliding than snowboarding: you ride down, then walk back up in soft sand, which is harder work than it looks. The camel ride is usually a short loop rather than a trek. Drinks are normally water and soft drinks; some operators add tea, coffee or a sandwich, and a few premium tours include a proper breakfast.
The ride back
The return drive is when you notice the heat building. Expect sand in your shoes, pockets and hair, and plan on a shower before anything else.
How hot is a morning safari? Temperatures by month
The table shows long-term average daily lows and highs for Dubai city from the UAE's National Center of Meteorology, with approximate sunrise times on the 15th of each month. The inland desert often feels cooler than the city at dawn in winter and heats up quickly once the sun is high, so treat the city figures as a guide rather than a desert forecast.
| Month | Approx. sunrise | Avg low / high (Dubai) | How a morning in the dunes feels |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 7:05 am | 15°C / 24°C | Chilly at dawn, especially in an open vehicle or on a dune top. Bring a layer. |
| February | 6:54 am | 16°C / 26°C | Cool start, comfortable by mid-morning. |
| March | 6:29 am | 19°C / 29°C | Mild at sunrise, warm by the time you head back. |
| April | 5:57 am | 22°C / 34°C | Pleasant at dawn; the sand warms fast after 9 am. |
| May | 5:34 am | 26°C / 38°C | Warm even at sunrise. A sunrise tour is the better choice. |
| June | 5:28 am | 29°C / 40°C | Hot from the start. Sunrise tours only if you go at all. |
| July | 5:37 am | 31°C / 42°C | One of the two hottest months. Short, early outings only. |
| August | 5:52 am | 32°C / 42°C | Similar to July, and often humid. Short, early outings only. |
| September | 6:04 am | 29°C / 40°C | Still summer heat. Sunrise tours are more bearable. |
| October | 6:16 am | 25°C / 36°C | Warm, easing through the month. |
| November | 6:35 am | 21°C / 31°C | Comfortable at dawn, warm by late morning. |
| December | 6:56 am | 17°C / 27°C | Cool, fresh mornings. A good month for it. |

Best months for a morning desert safari
- November to March: the easiest months. Cool dawns, comfortable late mornings, and a standard 8 or 9 am start works fine.
- October and April: good if you start early. By late morning the sun is strong, so a sunrise tour gives you the most comfortable hours.
- May to September: the morning slot is the more bearable choice in summer, but only with a sunrise start. Expect heat from the moment you step out of the car, and keep the outing short.
Photography is best in the first hour after sunrise in any month, when shadows across the dunes are long and the light is soft.
What to wear and bring on a morning safari
- Loose, light layers: cotton or linen that covers shoulders and knees is comfortable and respectful at the camp. In December to February add a fleece or light jacket for the dawn chill.
- Closed shoes you don't mind filling with sand, or sandals you can slip off for the dunes. Bare feet on sand are fine at dawn but not later on a summer morning.
- Sunglasses and a hat or scarf: glare off the sand is strong and a scarf keeps blown sand off your face.
- High-SPF sunscreen, applied before you leave the hotel.
- Water: operators provide it, but carry your own bottle for the drive.
- A bag for your phone: sand gets into ports and lenses quickly.
- Motion sickness tablets if you are prone to it, taken before the dune drive rather than during it. An empty stomach tends to make things worse, so eat something light first.

Who a morning safari may not suit
Dune bashing is rough. Operators generally advise against it for pregnant travellers, people with back, neck or heart conditions, and very young children, and each sets its own age rules. Some companies will run a gentler drive or skip the dune section on request. Planning the rest of the day after a morning safari
The main practical benefit of the morning slot is getting your afternoon and evening back. A few things make that work:
- Leave a buffer. Return times slip with traffic and group pickups. Avoid booking a timed ticket or a restaurant table before about 2 pm.
- Plan something low-effort first. After a pre-dawn start, most people want a shower, lunch and a rest by the pool before heading out again.
- Save indoor sights for the hottest hours. Malls, museums and aquariums fill the early afternoon comfortably, especially from May to September.
- Use the evening for the city. A morning in the dunes pairs well with an evening at the beach, a dhow cruise or dinner out. Our list of things to do in Dubai has ideas.
- Sunrise and a late night don't mix. If you have a late evening planned the night before, choose a standard 8 to 9 am pickup instead.

Yes. Most morning tours have you back at your hotel by around midday, leaving the afternoon and evening free. Leave a buffer for traffic before any timed booking, and plan indoor sights for the hottest part of the day.
