Entry and the FCDO advice for UK travellers

British citizens receive a visa on arrival allowing up to 90 days in any 180-day period, the rule in place since September 2024. Your passport should be valid for at least six months. Staying longer than allowed costs AED 50 per extra day. Details, including other British nationality types, are on our Dubai visa for UK passport holders page.

Check the FCDO's UAE travel advice on GOV.UK before you book and again before you fly. Its July 2026 update warns of the risk of Iranian strikes in the region, and in March 2026 a drone strike near Dubai International Airport stopped flights for more than seven hours. Sign up for FCDO email alerts, and make sure your insurance remains valid if the advice changes.

Flights from the UK

Direct flights from London take about seven hours, and slightly longer on the way back. Emirates flies direct to Dubai International (DXB) from London and several regional airports including Manchester, Birmingham and Glasgow, and British Airways also flies from London. Routes and timetables change, so check before you book. Flying via another Gulf hub can cost less, but it adds a connection.

Time difference and jet lag

The UAE does not change its clocks. Dubai is 3 hours ahead of the UK from late March to late October (BST) and 4 hours ahead in winter (GMT). That makes jet lag mild, and it makes Dubai practical for a long weekend. A 9pm dinner in Dubai is 6pm in London in summer and 5pm in winter.

Paying in pounds: cards, cash and exchange

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar, so the pound to dirham rate moves with the pound to dollar rate. Check a live rate before you travel rather than relying on a figure from an old guide. Contactless card payment works almost everywhere, including taxis and the metro.

Best time to go around UK holidays

November to March is the most comfortable season, with warm days and cooler evenings. June to September is very hot, often above 40°C, but hotel rates drop and most attractions are indoors.

Insurance and health

Your GHIC or EHIC is not valid in the UAE, and private medical care is expensive, so get travel insurance with medical cover. Declare any medical conditions and check that the policy still applies under the current FCDO advice. Some UK prescription medicines are controlled in the UAE. Our page on Dubai laws for British tourists covers medicines, FCDO consular help and the cases that affect Britons, and Dubai laws tourists must know covers the rules that apply to everyone.
