What happens when you land in Dubai on a UK passport

On a full British citizen passport you go straight to passport control, get a free visit visa recorded on arrival, collect your bags and walk through customs. There is no form to complete and nothing to pay. Most delays come from the wrong queue, undeclared medicines or cash, or a passport with too little validity.

This page follows the order you will meet each step at Dubai International (DXB) or Dubai World Central (DWC). For the entry rules themselves (the 90 days in 180 limit, which British passports qualify, BN(O) questions), see our guide to the UAE visa rules for UK citizens. Details are as of September 2026; check official sites before travelling.

Before you fly: what to have ready

Before you go, read the latest FCDO travel advice for the UAE. As of September 2026 it warns of the risk of Iranian strikes in the region, and a drone strike near DXB in March 2026 halted flights for more than seven hours. Build some slack into connections.

Smart gates: who can use them

Dubai Airports says the smart gates are open to UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents and visa-on-arrival guests with biometric passports, which includes current UK passports. You do not need to pre-register: first-time users are registered at the passport control touchpoint on arrival, and the gate usually clears you within seconds.

The gates are not for everyone. Dubai Airports lists People of Determination, guests with large strollers, families with children and anyone under 1.2 metres tall as needing the staffed desks. If you are travelling with young children, join the desk queue together.

Customs allowances for UK arrivals

Customs sits after baggage reclaim. The figures below are Dubai Customs' passenger allowances for adults aged 18 and over, as of September 2026.

Dubai Customs allowances (18+)
ItemAllowance
AlcoholUp to 4 litres, or 2 cartons of beer (24 cans of up to 355 ml each)
Tobacco200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 500 g of tobacco
Cash and valuablesDeclare cash, cheques, precious metals or stones worth over AED 60,000
Pork products and pornographyIllegal to bring in (GOV.UK)
WeaponsNeed advance permission (GOV.UK)

The UAE has zero tolerance for drugs, so check e-cigarette liquids and any CBD or cannabis-derived products very carefully before packing. The full list of restricted goods is in our guide to Dubai customs and import rules.

Medicines: the rule that catches British visitors

GOV.UK states that visitors can bring up to 3 months' supply of medication, reduced to one month's supply if the medicine is on the list requiring approval. Controlled medicines need approval from the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention before you travel, and bringing in unapproved medication can lead to prosecution.

DXB or DWC: what changes

The immigration and customs steps are identical at both airports. The difference is distance. DXB sits close to Deira and has its own metro stations, while DWC is in the far south of Dubai with no metro link, so a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the practical option. Our guide to getting from Dubai airport to the city compares the options.

If you are only connecting and stay airside, you do not pass immigration or receive a visa; GOV.UK notes that transit passengers who do not clear immigration need only 3 months' passport validity.

Common arrival problems and how to avoid them

Frequently asked questions

Can UK passport holders use the smart gates at Dubai airport?

Usually yes. Dubai Airports says visa-on-arrival guests with biometric passports can use the smart gates, and first-time users are registered at the passport control touchpoint. Families with children, anyone under 1.2 metres and guests with large strollers use the staffed desks.

What happens at Dubai passport control for British visitors?

The officer or smart gate reads your passport, takes a facial photo and records your entry. Full British citizen passport holders receive a free visit visa on the spot, with no forms to fill in.

How much alcohol can I bring into Dubai from the UK?

Dubai Customs allows travellers aged 18 and over up to 4 litres of alcohol or 2 cartons of beer of 24 cans each (up to 355 ml per can). Any excess is confiscated.

How many cigarettes can I bring into Dubai?

Up to 200 cigarettes, or 50 cigars, or 500 grams of tobacco, for travellers aged 18 and over, according to Dubai Customs.

Do I need to declare cash when arriving in Dubai?

Yes, if you are 18 or over and carry cash, cheques, precious metals or stones worth more than AED 60,000 or the equivalent. Declare it through Dubai Customs before or on arrival.

Can I bring my UK prescription medicines to Dubai?

Usually, but check first. GOV.UK says visitors can bring up to 3 months' supply, reduced to one month for medicines on the UAE approval list. Controlled medicines need advance approval from the UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention.

Is arriving at DWC different from DXB?

The immigration and customs steps are the same. Dubai World Central is much further from central Dubai, so plan your onward transport before you land.
