One of the world's finest museums of Islamic culture — 5,000+ artifacts spanning 1,400 years of Islamic achievement in science, art, trade, and architecture.
The Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization is housed in a converted traditional souk building near the Sharjah Corniche, topped by a distinctive golden dome. The collection spans 7 galleries covering Islamic science, Quran manuscripts, art, trade, and astronomy.
The history of Islam from the 7th century, with maps, manuscripts, and historical artefacts tracing Islam's spread across the world.
Rare illuminated Quran manuscripts from across the Islamic world, plus exhibits on Arabic calligraphy — one of the most beautiful writing traditions on earth.
The museum's jewel — extraordinary Islamic astronomical instruments including astrolabes (used before GPS to determine prayer times and qibla direction), celestial globes, and star charts. The mathematics and precision is stunning.
Islamic contributions to medicine, chemistry, and mathematics — from Ibn Sina (Avicenna) to Al-Khawarizmi (inventor of algebra). Instruments, manuscripts, and illustrations.
The global Islamic trade networks of the 8th-15th centuries — coins, weights, measures, and the economic sophistication of the Islamic world.
Ceramics, textiles, metalwork, and architectural models from the Islamic world — geometric patterns, arabesque designs, and decorative arts.
Don't miss: The Astronomy Gallery astrolabes — these 10th-13th century instruments calculated prayer times, determined the direction of Mecca, and tracked celestial movements with extraordinary precision. Far more sophisticated than anything contemporary in medieval Europe.
