The authentic heart of Dubai — wind-tower buildings, a 1787 fort, wooden boats, and the world's largest gold market. All within AED 10 and a Metro ride.
Dubai's only surviving 19th-century neighbourhood — wind-tower houses, narrow alleys, galleries, and charming cafes. XVA Art Hotel and Arabian Tea House are the most atmospheric spots inside.
Inside the oldest building in Dubai (1787 Al Fahidi Fort). Displays on traditional Bedouin life, pearl diving, old Dubai markets, and the city's extraordinary transformation over 50 years. Excellent for understanding Dubai's context.
The most iconic AED 1 experience in the world. A traditional wooden abra (water taxi) crosses the Dubai Creek in 5 minutes, connecting Bur Dubai to the Deira souk area. You can also hire a private abra for AED 100/hour.
A labyrinth of stalls selling frankincense (AED 10-30), saffron (AED 30-80 per gram), dried limes, henna, and exotic spices. Bargaining is expected — start 40% below asking price. Best experienced in the morning.
The world's largest gold market — over 300 shops displaying 10 tonnes of gold jewellery. Window shopping is welcome and free. Gold is sold by weight at international spot price plus 10-15% workmanship — often cheaper than European cities.
A newer development designed to feel like historic Old Dubai — waterfront restaurants, boutique galleries, and an Abra boat stop. Best at sunset and evening when the lights reflect on the creek. Free entry.
Recommended day plan: Start at Al Fahidi (9am), Dubai Museum (10am), Abra across Creek (11:30am), Spice Souk (noon), Gold Souk (1pm), lunch at Karachi Darbar or Al Ustad (2pm, AED 20-40), Textile Souk (3:30pm), back to Al Seef for sunset and dinner (6pm).
Old Dubai refers to the historic Bur Dubai and Deira districts on either side of Dubai Creek — the original 19th-century trading settlement. It contains Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (restored wind-tower buildings), Dubai Museum, and the famous souks accessed by traditional Abra boat.
Yes — Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood (Al Bastakiya) is completely free to explore. The 19th-century wind-tower houses, art galleries, XVA Art Hotel, Arabian Tea House, and alleyways are all accessible without any entry fee. Dubai Museum inside the adjacent Al Fahidi Fort costs AED 3.
Just AED 1 per person. The traditional wooden Abra crosses Dubai Creek in 5 minutes connecting Bur Dubai to the Deira side. Pay the boat driver on boarding. Boats run continuously from early morning to midnight. For a private Abra tour, hire for AED 100/hour.
A full day (6-7 hours) is ideal. Half-day (3-4 hours) covers the highlights: Al Fahidi + Dubai Museum + Abra + quick souk visit. Add a morning for a complete experience including proper browsing of Gold and Spice Souks and a leisurely lunch.
Metro: Red or Green Line to Al Ghubaiba station (Bur Dubai side, for Al Fahidi and Dubai Museum). For Deira (Gold/Spice Souks), use the Abra from Bur Dubai, or Metro to Al Ras station. From Downtown: 20 minutes by Metro or 15 minutes by taxi (AED 20-30).
