Do UK citizens need a visa for the UAE?
No advance visa is needed if you hold a full British citizen passport. According to GOV.UK, British citizens are issued a visitor or tourist visa free of charge on arrival in the UAE, valid for up to 90 days over a 180-day period. There is nothing to apply for before you fly.
That rule covers every emirate, not just Dubai. The key conditions are the type of British passport you hold, how much validity it has left, and how many days you have already spent in the country in the past 180. Each is covered below. Rules can change at short notice, so check the FCDO entry requirements page before travelling (information here is as of September 2026).
| Visa before travel | Not needed for a full British citizen passport |
|---|---|
| Visa type | Visit or tourist visa issued on arrival |
| Cost | Free |
| Maximum stay | 90 days in any 180-day period |
| Passport validity | 6 months from arrival (3 months for UAE residents and airside transit) |
| Work allowed | No |
| Overstay fine | AED 50 per day |
How the 90 days in 180 rule works
The UK allowance changed in September 2024. Before that, British visitors received a 30-day stamp; now the limit is a running total of 90 days inside any 180-day window. Every day you spend in the UAE in the previous 180 days counts, whether it was one long stay or several short trips.
- One long stay: arrive 1 November and you must leave by the end of 29 January at the latest.
- Several trips: 30 days in January, 30 in March and 30 in May uses the full 90. A fourth trip in June would push you over.
- Counting back: on any day you are in the country, look back 180 days and add up the days spent there. It must stay at 90 or below.
Immigration officers can still refuse entry at their discretion, for example to frequent visitors who appear to be living or working in the UAE. Keep a return ticket and accommodation details handy.
Which British passports qualify
This is where most confusion comes from. The GOV.UK guidance is written for people travelling on a full "British citizen" passport. Look at the nationality line on your photo page.
| Nationality shown in passport | What to expect |
|---|---|
| British Citizen | Free visit visa on arrival, up to 90 days in any 180 |
| British National (Overseas), BN(O) | Not covered by the GOV.UK guidance. Confirm with the UAE Embassy or ICP before booking |
| British Overseas Territories Citizen, British Overseas Citizen, British Subject, British Protected Person | Not covered by the GOV.UK guidance. Confirm with the UAE Embassy or ICP before booking |
| Dual national (British plus another passport) | Enter and leave on the same passport you used to check in; the British one usually gives the simplest entry |
If your passport is not a full British citizen passport, do not assume the on-arrival visa applies. The UAE's own ICP website and the UAE Embassy in London are the places to confirm. If another nationality is involved, our UAE visa guide by nationality sets out the other routes.

Ask about your passportsPassport validity and documents
GOV.UK states that a UK passport needs at least 6 months' validity from your arrival date for a normal visit. Airlines check this at the departure gate, so a passport with 5 months left can stop you before you leave the UK. The 3-month rule applies only to UAE residence permit holders and passengers who stay airside in transit.
- A full British citizen passport with 6 months' validity from the day you land.
- A return or onward ticket, which officers or airlines may ask to see.
- Your hotel booking or the address of the person you are staying with.
- Each child on their own passport. Children are assessed individually.
What happens at the airport itself, including smart gates, customs and medicines, is covered step by step in our guide to arriving in Dubai on a UK passport.
What the visit visa does not allow
The on-arrival visa is for tourism, visiting family and friends, and short business visits. GOV.UK warns that working on a visit visa can lead to a fine, a prison sentence and deportation. Paid work needs a work permit and residence visa arranged through a UAE employer.
Overstaying is expensive. The UAE charges AED 50 for each day beyond your permitted stay, and a long overstay can bring more serious consequences. If you think you may need more than 90 days, read our guide to staying longer in Dubai from the UK, which covers extensions and residency routes. To ask about extending, GOV.UK directs visitors to the GDRFA in Dubai or the ICP for the other emirates.
Before you book: current travel advice
Entry rules are only half the picture. As of September 2026 the FCDO's UAE advice includes a warning about the risk of Iranian strikes in the region, and a drone strike near Dubai International Airport in March 2026 halted flights for more than seven hours.
