How long can you stay in Dubai from the UK?

On a full British citizen passport you can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period on the free visit visa issued at the airport. That limit has applied since September 2024, when it replaced the old 30-day stamp. If you want to stay longer, you have three choices: ask about an extension, leave before day 90, or switch to a different visa.

This page is for people planning a long winter, a trial move, or a relocation. For the basic entry rules and which British passports qualify, see our guide to the UAE visa for UK citizens. For what happens at the airport, read arriving in Dubai on a UK passport. Information is as of September 2026.

Older advice is out of date. Many sites still describe a 30-day stamp with two paid 30-day extensions for British visitors. That was the pre-September 2024 system. UK citizens now get up to 90 days in any 180 from the start.

Extending your visit

GOV.UK tells visitors who want to extend their stay to contact the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in Dubai, or the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) for the other emirates. Extension eligibility and fees depend on your visa type and circumstances, and they change, so get an answer from the authority rather than a forum.

We cover the general extension process for tourists in more detail in how to extend a UAE tourist visa.

Overstaying: what it costs

If you stay past your permitted period, the UAE charges an overstay fine of AED 50 per day (as of September 2026). GOV.UK warns that fines accumulate for each day of overstay, and you will need to settle them before you can leave. Longer overstays can bring more serious consequences, including problems re-entering later.

Days over your limitOverstay fine (AED 50 per day)
1 dayAED 50
7 daysAED 350
30 daysAED 1,500

The fine is the minimum cost. It does not include any administrative fees, and it does not guarantee you avoid other action. The simplest rule: count your days, and plan to leave with a margin.

Options for staying longer or moving to Dubai

If you need more than 90 days, a visit visa is the wrong tool. These are the main routes for British citizens, summarised at a high level. Fees, salary thresholds and document lists change, so use the official links to check the current conditions.

Working in Dubai

You cannot work on a visit visa, and that includes remote work for a UK employer while you are in the country as a visitor. GOV.UK warns that working on a visit visa can lead to a fine, a prison sentence and deportation. For paid local work, an employer must sponsor you. Our guide to moving to Dubai as an expat covers the job, housing and residency steps.

Remote workers and digital nomads

The remote work visa lets people employed abroad, or running their own foreign business, live in the UAE while working for that overseas employer or company. Income and insurance conditions apply. We explain the application in the UAE digital nomad visa guide, and the day-to-day side in Dubai for digital nomads.

Family and long-term residency

A UAE resident can usually sponsor a spouse and children, subject to income and housing conditions set by the authorities. The Green and Golden Visas are self-sponsored and longer-term, with eligibility based on skills, investment, property or business. See the official u.ae visa and Emirates ID pages for the current criteria.

Before committing to a long stay

Check the latest FCDO travel advice for the UAE. As of September 2026 it warns of the risk of Iranian strikes in the region, and a drone strike near Dubai International Airport in March 2026 halted flights for more than seven hours. Make sure your insurance covers a long stay, and that any health cover meets the requirements of the visa you choose.

Frequently asked questions

Not on the standard visit visa. Full British citizen passport holders get up to 90 days in any 180-day period. Staying longer means asking the GDRFA about an extension, or moving to a different visa such as a work, family, remote work or Golden Visa.

AED 50 for each day you remain after your permitted stay ends, as of September 2026. A long overstay can also lead to more serious immigration consequences, so do not rely on paying the fine as a plan.

GOV.UK advises contacting the GDRFA in Dubai, or the ICP for the other emirates, about extending your stay. Ask before your permitted period ends and do not assume an extension will be granted.

The visit visa does not allow work, and GOV.UK warns that working on one can lead to fines, prison and deportation. The UAE runs a separate remote work visa for people employed or self-employed abroad.

For most people it is a job offer: the employer arranges the work permit and residence visa. Other routes are family sponsorship by a UAE resident, the remote work visa, the self-sponsored Green Visa and the long-term Golden Visa.

Yes. The UAE offers a 5-year multiple-entry tourist visa that allows stays of up to 90 days per visit, extendable once for a further 90 days. It needs an application and fees, so check the eligibility conditions on u.ae.
