UAE luxury experiences outside Dubai: Abu Dhabi, Ras Al Khaimah and the desert

The strongest luxury experiences in the UAE outside Dubai fall into three groups: Abu Dhabi's cultural landmarks and island resorts, Ras Al Khaimah's mountains and protected desert, and remote desert resorts such as Qasr Al Sarab near Liwa. They are quieter than Dubai, suit two or three nights each, and pair well with a city stay.

Abu Dhabi: culture at a premium level

Abu Dhabi's luxury appeal is less about nightlife and more about space and culture.

Saadiyat Island has beach resorts that feel far calmer than central Dubai. For an aerial view, see our Abu Dhabi helicopter tour page, and for a full comparison of the two islands read Yas vs Saadiyat.

Desert resorts

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara

Built in fort style among the dunes near the Liwa oasis in Abu Dhabi emirate, Qasr Al Sarab has rooms, suites and pool villas. Activities include camel treks, falconry displays, dune drives and stargazing. It is far from any city, so treat it as a destination in its own right. Our Liwa desert guide covers the area.

The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert

This all-villa resort sits within a protected desert reserve of around 1,235 acres, where Arabian oryx and gazelles roam. Every villa has a private pool, and the tented villas face open dunes. It is much closer to Dubai than Liwa, which makes it the easier desert escape for a short trip.

Ras Al Khaimah: mountains and adventure

Ras Al Khaimah adds scenery the other emirates lack. Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak, is home to Jebel Jais Flight, which holds the Guinness World Record for the longest zipline at 2,832 metres. Prices vary by day and season, so check the official booking site. The mountain road also leads to viewpoints and restaurants that are noticeably cooler than the coast.

On the coast, Al Marjan Island has several large beach resorts. See our Jebel Jais guide and Dubai to Ras Al Khaimah day-trip guide for access and timings.

Practical notes

Frequently asked questions

What are the best luxury desert resorts in the UAE?

Two of the best-known are Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara, near the Liwa oasis in Abu Dhabi emirate, and The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Wadi Desert, set in a protected desert reserve. Both offer private pool villas and desert activities such as camel treks and guided nature drives.

Is Abu Dhabi worth adding to a luxury Dubai trip?

Yes, if culture matters to you. Abu Dhabi has Louvre Abu Dhabi, Qasr Al Watan, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and Emirates Palace, and quieter resort beaches on Saadiyat Island. Two nights is enough for a first visit.

How long is the Jebel Jais zipline?

Jebel Jais Flight in Ras Al Khaimah holds the Guinness World Record for the longest zipline, at 2,832 metres. Ticket prices change by day and season, so check the official Jebel Jais booking site before you go.

How do I get from Dubai to the desert resorts?

Most guests drive or book a hotel transfer. Qasr Al Sarab is a long drive into the Liwa area, so plan it as a two-night stay rather than a day trip. Al Wadi Desert is closer to Dubai, in Ras Al Khaimah.

When is the best time to visit UAE desert resorts?

November to March, when days are warm rather than extreme and desert activities are comfortable. In summer, outdoor activities are limited to early mornings and evenings.
