Where to do a desert safari in the UAE: Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Liwa

Where you are staying usually decides this. Most visitors do a Dubai safari; Abu Dhabi suits people based in the capital; Liwa is a separate trip for people who want the biggest dunes.

Dubai: red dunes, Al Awir and the conservation reserve

Most Dubai safaris head south east of the city. Budget and mid-range operators mainly use the red dunes along the Dubai to Hatta road, often sold as "Lahbab" or "red dunes", and the desert around Al Awir and Al Marmoom. A smaller group of premium operators drive inside the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, where access is limited and prices are much higher. Arabian Adventures, for example, puts its reserve location at about 35 minutes from Downtown Dubai.

Dubai has by far the most operators, so it has the widest choice of formats and prices, and hotel pickup is standard on most packages. The trade-off is busy camps, especially at weekends and in the cooler months. For current Dubai price ranges, pickup zones and booking red flags, see our Dubai desert safari prices and booking guide.

Abu Dhabi: desert trips from the capital

If you are staying in Abu Dhabi, driving to Dubai for a safari wastes most of a day. Abu Dhabi operators run evening and morning safaris into the desert outside the city, commonly towards Al Khatim, with a similar programme of dune driving, camel rides and a camp meal. Fewer operators means less choice at the budget end. Our Abu Dhabi desert safari guide covers the options.

Liwa: the Empty Quarter dunes

Liwa Oasis sits in the Al Dhafra region on the edge of the Rub al Khali (Empty Quarter). The dunes here are on a different scale: Visit Abu Dhabi describes Tal Moreeb as rising to about 300 metres, with a slope of more than 50 degrees. It is a long drive from Abu Dhabi city and further again from Dubai, so Liwa works best as an overnight or two-day trip, often combined with a desert resort stay. Read our Liwa desert guide before planning it.

Factor Dubai Abu Dhabi Liwa
Typical trip Half day, evening or morning Half day, evening or morning Overnight or two days
Dune scale Moderate Moderate Very large (Tal Moreeb about 300 m)
Operator choice Very wide Moderate Limited, mostly specialists
Crowds Busy camps in peak season Quieter Quiet outside festival dates
Best for First-timers, short stays, all budgets People staying in Abu Dhabi Repeat visitors, photographers, off-road fans

Season, safety and who should skip dune driving

The format matters less than the month and your health. Check these before choosing.

  • Season: October to April is the comfortable window for evening and overnight trips. June to September is extremely hot, so a morning safari or a short evening one makes more sense. Desert nights in winter can feel cold, so bring a layer.
  • Health: operators such as Arabian Adventures state that pregnant women and people with heart disease, neck or back problems should not take part in dune driving. Many operators let these guests travel straight to the camp instead.
  • Children: age limits and child seat rules differ by operator. Arabian Adventures, for instance, does not take children under two on dune drives and requires child seats. Our family safari page compares options.
  • Licensed operators: book with a company that can give you a trade licence or that sells through a recognised platform, and read recent reviews about driving style and pickup punctuality.
  • Travel advisories: as of September 2026 the US State Department rates the UAE at Level 3 (Reconsider Travel), Canada advises avoiding non-essential travel, and the UK FCDO warns of possible Iranian strikes in the region. Check your government's current advice and your insurance before booking any tour.
Alcohol: most standard camps serve soft drinks only. A few premium operators hold licences and sell alcohol as an upgrade; if it matters to you, confirm in writing before paying.

UAE desert safari FAQ

Short answers to the questions we are asked most about choosing a safari in the UAE.

A shared evening safari from Dubai. It packs dune driving, a sunset stop, camel ride, sandboarding and a camp dinner with shows into one afternoon and evening, and hotel pickup is normally included. Choose a morning safari instead if you want a shorter, cooler outing without dinner, or a private safari if you have small children or a special occasion.

Most Dubai safaris run in the red dunes along the Dubai to Hatta road (often called Lahbab) or around Al Awir and Al Marmoom, and a few premium operators use the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve. Abu Dhabi trips usually go to the desert south and east of the city towards Al Khatim, while Liwa, on the edge of the Empty Quarter, is a long drive away and suits an overnight stay.

Tal Moreeb near Liwa Oasis rises to about 300 metres with slopes of more than 50 degrees, according to Visit Abu Dhabi. It is one of the tallest dunes in the world and hosts the Moreeb Hill Climb during the Liwa International Festival. Normal Dubai safari dunes are far smaller.

October to April is the comfortable season for evening and overnight safaris, with cooler evenings in December to February. From June to September daytime heat is extreme, so many travellers choose a morning safari or keep time outside the vehicle short. Check the forecast before you go, because operators may cancel for sandstorms or unusual weather.

No. Operators such as Arabian Adventures advise that pregnant women and people with heart disease, neck or back problems should not take part in dune driving, and many set minimum ages and child seat rules. People who skip the dune drive can often join the camp part, so ask the operator before booking.

It depends on the format. As of September 2026 shared evening safaris from Dubai are advertised from roughly AED 90 to 200 per person with budget operators, while conservation reserve operators and private vehicles cost several times more. See our Dubai desert safari price guide and each format page for current ranges, and check what is included before paying.
